From Builder to Visionary
Owner, Murray Arnott's commitment to the highest
standards of quality and service began over twenty-five years ago
as a carpenter and builder in British Columbia, Canada. After
studying architecture at McGill University, he moved to the world's
premier winter resort, Whistler, BC, where he designed numerous
wonderful log homes through the eighties and nineties, including
homes in other regions of Canada and the United States.
In 1998, Murray was awarded Best Home in British
Columbia for a home in its size category. The
article, Into the Unknown: The Voyage of Creative Risk, gives
some insight into Murray's philosophy behind the design of this
home and the creative process. The recognition received from this
home led Murray to offer his services throughout North America and
around the world. He relocated to Eastern Canada and diversified
his practice to include timber frame and sustainable design. Initially
operating as Murray Arnott Design Ltd., he founded Heartwood Log
& Timber Design to service all regions of the United States.
Heartwood’s office is in the beautiful town of Banner Elk,
in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina.
His leadership and association with the International
Log Builders' Association, where he served as Vice-President, have
kept him at the forefront of log building technology.
He has developed close relationships with many of the finest log builders
in the world. In addition, Murray strives to be in touch with
the interests and desires of would-be log home owners. He has
been a consultant to numerous log industry publications and wrote
the Design Column for Log Home Living Magazine for several years.
His book, ON DESIGN: Designing a Better Log
Home, has received glowing reviews.
